What is the legal basis?
Toys must carry the CE marking within the European Union. This means that the products fully comply with legal requirements. For toys, these requirements are usually based on the European Directive EN 71, the so-called Toy Safety Directive, which specifies exactly what requirements toys must meet to be safe for children.
Who issues the CE marking?
The CE mark is issued by the manufacturer itself, as a declaration that the product meets the requirements. However, the manufacturer may only affix the CE mark if the product truly complies.
How does a manufacturer know that their products are safe?
The requirements of EN 71 are demonstrated through standardized tests carried out by laboratories on behalf of the manufacturer or importer.
What does Betzold test?
Independent, accredited test laboratories test toys that are produced specifically for Betzold or imported from outside the European Union. For goods sourced from manufacturers within the EU, we obtain confirmation of conformity and, if necessary, testing certificates. Where certificates are presented, we also verify their authenticity with the issuing test laboratory if required.

As a toy manufacturer and retailer, Betzold bears great responsibility for the safety of all children who play with our materials. Through careful and thorough testing, we strive to live up to this responsibility. Products that do not meet our high standards do not make it into our assortment!
